Why access to your home for safety checks matters

Why access to your home for safety checks matters

Allowing our colleagues and contractors access to your home at the agreed appointment time helps keep you, your household, and your neighbours safe.

It’s in everyone’s interest

Just like an MOT for a car, these checks help make sure everything in your home is working as it should be and must be completed regularly:

  • Annual gas safety checks in homes with a gas supply
  • Electrical safety checks every five years
  • Fire safety checks, including smoke alarms, fire doors, and assessments
  • Annual smoke and heat detector checks

These checks help identify potential risks early and reduce the chance of serious incidents such as fires, gas leaks, or electrical faults. Allowing access isn’t just about your own home – it also helps protect neighbouring properties and shared buildings, especially in blocks of flats where issues can affect more than one household.

We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has recently allowed access for safety checks. Your cooperation really does make a difference, and it helps us keep your homes safe, warm and compliant for everyone.

Why access is essential

We carry out these checks to make sure your home remains safe, well maintained and free from avoidable risks. Some of these tests and inspections are required by law, but their real purpose is to protect you, your household and those living nearby.

Continued refusal of access is a breach of your tenancy agreement and we may have no choice but to take steps to gain access so these essential checks can be completed. We always aim to work cooperatively and avoid this wherever possible.
