RTS electricity meters are being switched off: here's what you need to do

If you have an older Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) electricity meter, the technology that supports RTS meters began switching off from 30 June 2025 and is being phased out across the UK on an area-by-area basis, with the final phase expected to be completed by the end of summer 2026.

There's no need to worry, but now is the time to act and arrange an upgrade. Without an upgrade, your heating, hot water and off-peak electricity tariff may no longer work as expected once the service is switched off in your area.

Your electricity supplier is responsible for ensuring you have a suitable replacement meter installed and that your service isn't disrupted. Contact your supplier as soon as possible to avoid potential disruption.

How do I know if I have an RTS meter?

You may have an RTS meter if:

  • Your home has a separate switch box near your electricity meter labelled "Radio Teleswitch" or "Teleswitch".
  • Your home is heated using electricity or storage heaters.
  • There is no gas supply to your area, which is common in some rural communities and high-rise flats.
  • You benefit from cheaper electricity at certain times of the day through tariffs such as Economy 7, Economy 10 or Total Heat Total Control.

If you're unsure, contact your electricity supplier who can confirm which meter you have.

What do I need to do?

If you have an RTS meter, contact your electricity supplier to arrange a free meter upgrade. In most cases, suppliers will replace your RTS meter with a smart meter that provides similar functionality while offering additional benefits.

A smart meter can provide:

  • Automatic meter readings.
  • More accurate bills based on actual energy use.
  • Access to smart meter tariffs.
  • Better visibility of your energy usage.

Why is this important?

Without the RTS signal, your meter may no longer be able to switch correctly between peak and off-peak rates. This could result in:

  • Heating and hot water not working as normal.
  • Storage heaters charging at the wrong time of day.
  • Higher energy costs or incorrect billing.
  • Reduced access to suitable energy tariffs.

When do I need to act?

The RTS switch-off is already underway and will continue on a phased basis across the UK. If your supplier hasn't contacted you yet but you think you have an RTS meter, it's worth getting in touch now to arrange your upgrade and avoid any potential disruption.

Need more information?

You can find more information about the RTS switch-off and meter replacement programme on Ofgem's website, or contact your electricity supplier directly for advice and support. If you're unable to have a smart meter installed, your supplier must discuss alternative options and ensure you have a suitable meter in place.

Check your meter, contact your supplier, and arrange your free upgrade.

Taking action now will help ensure your heating, hot water and energy tariff continue to work as expected.
